I saw several hunks of the Canadian blue
marble in question a couple of years ago that
had metamorphic facies thick with asbestos
fibers. These were most clearly visible in
direct sunlight from a low angle--long, needle-
like crystals. With all metamorphic stones, as
well as with many igneous ones, it's important
to be alert for the possibility of asbestos,
especially in contact zones or areas that have
been visibly "stretched." (You can't tell
anything from a sawn block unless you break
off pieces.) In the case of the blue marble,
it might have been possible to avoid at least
some of the hazard by carefully slabbing off
portions with a diamond blade and carefully
disposing.
