Wayne--

I was aware that serpentine can contain
asbestos, but have never heard that it is
asbestos per se. In any case, yes, it is
chrysotile asbestos I have heard associated
with it. I am told there are three commercially
recognized forms of asbestos: chrysotile,
actinolite, and tremolite. I heard a report
that the US government does not consider
chrysotile to be dangerous, that the fibers are
ejected by the lungs in a way that other types
are not. So maybe in that sense serpentine is
"safe," if that can be confirmed in fact. But
another question remains: isn't it
likely that serpentine, which is an extremely
metamorphosed stone formed in a way as to
create asbestos, also might contain the other
forms of asbestos? I don't know the answer. For
me it's enough of a question to simply avoid
the stuff. There are enough other pretty stones
to carve.
