Ben, If you are planning on using the compressor to drive a
pneumatic carving hammer, and only that, then a compressor that
delivers 4 - 5 cfm at 90psi will serve. I used a small
2hp(electric) with 20 gal. storage tank for many years with good
results. However, other pneumatic tools such as grinders and
sanders have much larger air requirements, and a small portable
compressor will not drive them. Currently in my shop, I have a
5hp two stage speedair that delivers 17 + cfm at 90 psi, and
while I can have as many as 3 carving hammers running at the
same time, only one hammer can be running if a sander is being
used. I am not familiar with the air delivery on the small,
portable gas powered compressors which you might want to look
into if you are planning to use the compressor in the field.
The key is determining what the air requirements are for the
tools you plan on using, and getting a compressor capable of
delivering that volume of air. There is nothing more
frustrating than not having enough air to drive the tool in your
hand properly.
Good luck,
John VanCamp
