hand carving memorials
Hi Susan,
Not that alabaster would be used very often for memorials, but since it came up, I will butt in to say that alabaster is one of those potentially hazardous materials that you may want to mask up for. Alabaster is gypsum, aka plasterboard, sheetrock, etc. The dust can combine with moisture in your bronchiae and lungs to make a pretty fair stucco. It doesn't metabolize as calcium carbonate can, and can cause longterm health problems. Speaking only for myself, when grinding alabaster I always wear a mask. When handcarving, I don't mask but stay upwind. I guess we all have our own safety systems. Having as much information as possible helps.
Happy carving, Tracy Powell
