hand carving memorials
Hi all,
concerning lettering I might be called something of a
traditionalist. It's just because of the pure joy of
carving letters that I speak. I did most of my past
lettering work with mallet/hammer and chisels, by
hand. Recently I stopped by an old friend and did some
work with pneumatic hammers, first time in years. It
was good fun and I enjoyed the possibilities. However,
it made me look at hand crafted letters with a fresh
eye, I could compare structures and effects. I then
remembered a lettercutter in GB, I don't know his name
as I've only seen some gravestones. I admired them,
because one could identify every single stroke with
the hammer, you could sense the rhythm of carving. It
was plainly beautiful.
I think what I'm trying to say is, thatwhatever your
motivation to do a piece of work, you shouldn'T forget
the joy of working.
Cheers Richard
