Hi from Simon
Hi Clive,
No- I have not used Chillagoe marble for sculpture.
I have had some unmemorable experiences with it as slab & tile, cut from the
early blocks which popped up everywhere on the market in the 1980s. I would
like to get some good pieces to try.
I have selected outcropping local stone such as Ulam marble (from Bajool
near Gladstone) as well as limestone from Mt Etna (Mackay), Riverton (Texas,
Qld), Wellington (NSW). No luck with these as they were either fractured or
sugary, but I will track down some good Chillagoe stone to use.
I like your earlier idea about a (marble) sculpture symposium in Chillagoe,
I would like to make this happen sometime in the future. How about a
sandstone sculpture symposium at Helidon or Gosford?
Before Easter this year, I went to Currawinya National Park to help sculptor
Chris McKenzie make a stone entry statement to the park. The occasion was
the release of captive-bred bilbies into a 25 sq km protective enclosure.
Peter McCrae (alias 'The Beard') had built the fence using Conservation
Volunteer labour, and some of the team helped us clean up the sculpture
site. It is located near Hungerford, 1000 km west from Brisbane. I've posted
some photos here:
