problem chisel
Justin,
It sure sounds like you got a bad chisel.
If this is the first time you carved a good hard marble
after starting out on alabaster, then you will have to
change you style of carving a little bit. You will have to
resharpen you points daily, if not more, assuming that you
are using regular steel tools. This may a good time to
consider getting a carbide tipped point. You may already
have found that you cannot drive your tools through the
stone. The harder the stone , the steeper the angle of the
chisel. If the point feels like its getting stuck, back off
and work from another direction. With alabaster and other
soft stone you can get away with overpowering the stone, but
a good hard marble can be badly damaged, cracked and bruised
if you keep pounding away at a single location. Also you can
easily damage and break tools.
Let you hammer do the work, and hang in there!
