Wedges
I've found that a little water can assist with splitting, especially if it
is across the grain.
Tap the wedges in firmly (listen to the tension building as the ringing
rises in pitch), and evenly all round the stone or as far as you can reach.
Pour some water over the wedges, along the splitting line and walk away. The
capillary action of the water helps force tiny cracks open.
When you see a crack, leave it alone- the stone has broken at this spot. Tap
the wedges where the stone hasn't broken- if it is still resistant to
splitting evenly, pour some more water along the splitting line and take
another walk.
