Subject: An inspiring stone sculpture story

Don,
Your story of " The Last Italian " really rang true with me.
Around 1985 I went to Barre and met with a sculptor who had 3 other carvers
working in his studio, doing what he called standard schlock to pay the
bills while he competed for major commissions that fed the soul! I spent a
couple of hours with him and his crew and have never forgot it.

I showed him pictures of what I was carving at the time and he gently but
firmly told me that he needed carvers who were ready to start doing
finished work that was anatomically correct and ready for customers. I'm
sure he has long forgotten me, but getting a chance to talk art , granite ,
and the business of traditional sculpture with him , left a permanent
impression on me. Having the chance to talk to someone who has focused and
excelled in his art and craftsmanship for a lifetime energized me to
continue following my own path.

Your essay was sensitive, honest and brought back wonderful memories.
Thanks
George Graham
