Easy enough to experiment. See what happens to various cobble you have
laying around. I use a mild bleach solution to remove winter green and
black from granite and basalt and after a couple of years no
undesirable effects have shown up. However, I tried some iron remover
and a couple other things on some tuff (solidified volcanic ash) and
after a while some awful brownish grey streaks appeared. My wife
bleached a limestone garden sculpture and the color lightened up
considerably, but, to my eyes was not an improvement. If I guessed at
the principle involved, I would say you cannot change the color much,
but when you do it will be unpredictable and undesirable. I have come
to avoid use of chemicals because I think of stone art as timeless,
whereas chemical reactions are short term. But, hey, its fun to
experiment.
