Soapstone or Talc?
I finally found an old dresser lamp that was given to me about 30 years ago.
I don't know whether it is soapstone or talc or what but it is very soft and
white. Reminds me of the old welding marking sticks.
It is/was beautiful, 4 pieces and dyed pink, but it appears as though the
top dome was immerged in water and there is a large (4") circle that has
stress cracks and the pink is gone. The discoloration goes through the 5/16"
thickness but it is still intact. The ball shaped dome and the bases have
some detailed carving on them and it appears as though they were initially
black but have faded to gray or just no color.
I am not sure what was used to finish/seal the pieces but just the large
base for the dome has any of the coating left.
I would like to restore this lamp but am not sure where or how to start. How
would I re-dye the faded circle, fill the stress cracks, fill the carvings
with black, what to use for the black and seal the final project.
The OD of the dome is 6" and I could e-mail pictures if anyone is
interested.
Thanks for your input
