I don't know for sure, but it sounds to me like the lamp is made of
alabaster, dyed with stone dyes. These dyes are available from some of the
big lapidary-supply houses and are made for dying semi-precious stones used
in (costume)jewelry. Below are some addresses & phone numbers a couple of
