Paul,

Look back through the archives of this forum and you will find a lot of
discussion on your question.

For beginners I always suggest that you get some alabaster or soapstone, a
basic set of hand tools and start as soon as possible. The longer you wait
the easier it is to never start.

Call the art department of your local college and see if there is a class
you can join. Its always more fun to learn with other beginners. Start with
alabaster or soapstone because it is easier to carve and beautiful when
filed and sanded down. The tools needed are a 1 or 1.5 lb hammer, a point,
claw, and flat chisels. A wood rasp and bastard file, then sandpaper, from
80 thru 400 grit. A simple polish can be had by buffing with a clear paste
wax, just like polishing shoes.

I've done a lot of business with The Colorado Alabaster Co. in Fort Collins,
Colorado. You can get small rough pieces for a very reasonable cost.

Just remember to keep it simple, and have fun, and start now!
Good luck
George Graham
