I wouldn't trust epoyx- it's designed for holding things together, not for
supporting massive weights under pressure for decades.
How about carving a stone wedge, perhaps rockfaced or other hand tooled
textures, pull a mold from that and cast it in bronze. The thin edge of the
bronze won't get crushed, and the texture from the stone will keep the
bronze from getting the slick look. You could create quite an interesting
base that way, and with various patinas have a lot of control over tone and
color.
