Subject:
alabaster soft spots
Greetings Carvers, and happy labor day weekend to those in the states,
I am carving small pieces of alabaster and sanding them down with paper
to 1500 grit. Sometimes I find a small (~ 2 mm2) soft spot in the stone,
usually in a crystalline layer, that turns white (the stone is gray or
pink) and regardless of how deep I dig with a small chisel (or smooth
with paper), it still stays white like a stone bruise. This looks like
the equivilent of a spot of teenage acne on an otherwise smooth piece.
Does anyone have any tips on how to deal this problem? At present, I'm
just learning to live with the small imperfections of life <g >. atb, g2
