Introducing myself: Kip
Hi Kip. The problem with sandstone is two fold. The mineral
content is usually quartz for the most part, and quartz has a
moh hardness of 7. Tool steel around 5.6. That coupled with the
abrasive nature of sand stone means you take the cutting edge
off of your tool real fast, as you discovered. I have seen a
hand saw with carbide teeth, but have no idea where one can
purchase such a tool (any one else know?). An effective way of
cutting your stones down to size may be by using feathers and
wedges, a time honored method of blocking out and sizing stone.
Good luck,
