What to do with slate?
Donna,
Definitely get yourself something easier to work with than slate. Alabaster
is wonderful as it is very easy to work with and comes in many beautiful
colors. Be careful of soapstones as many of them contain asbestos.
FYI to all carvers or wanna bees ......there is a stonecarving weekend
workshop every June in Carthage, Missouri taught by a well known carver,
Bill Snow. His work can be seen at http://www.applecorestudios.com $150 and
stone can be purchased on site.
Well Donna, you could always sell it for use as a pool table. It should be
worth a good buck. Then invest the money in a nice workable piece of stone
that would be a joy to work with for your first carving. Consider one of
the many soapstones, or perhaps an alabaster.
