Tomas;

End of quote.

The Louvre has a special exhibit of Porphyry up right now (or at least
they did in early December when I visited it).

They published a large hardbound catalog book to go with it, the text is
in both French and English (about 40 Euro if I remember correctly). I
looked through it and it would have been well worth the outlay (even with
the low dollar) except my luggage was full of other book purchases, so I
had to figure I could purchase it later at AmazonUK and let them do the
shipping.

The examples of pieces in the show range from ancient to nineteenth
century, and were almost all red porphyry from Egypt, though some mention
is made of the other types/colors in the text (with examples if memory
serves me). Illustrations in the text were not limited to the
thirty-some objects actually in the gallery, but included numerous
well-known sculptures -- I recall a photo of the medieval carvings on St.
Mark's in Venice for instance.

My personal experience working with porphyry is limited to little chips
picked up in Italy and used as talisman-like found-objects in
multi-element sculptures where the carving is in limestone and marble ...

I'd love to get my hands on a chunk of red porphyry big enough to work
-- got any good sources? (wink, wink)

Good Carving (or writing) to you

Don
