Titles
Hi all Happy New Year,
As usual I turn to you when I draw blank when I've used up all my own
recourses.
Creating titles for sculptures are always perplexing as every combination of
words carry all sorts of connotations.
Here is my problem I do not want to use my most recent naming system Art
over Modern Art followed by More over Less or Something over Nothing etc as
I feel it has served it's purpose. In every case the work consists of a
large marble head on a very plain or minimalist plinth. I feel its time to
try to expand the message a little. I am considering replacing the Art over
Modern Art etc with:
"Ars longa vita brevis" Art is long, life is short
But but but, another side of me feels an obligation to give each work a very
precisely chosen title. I am about to install a new work for a client and it
seems worth trying to give it a helpful title but this where the problems
really start.
The sculpture is essentially an easy that explores classicist values based
half on my own step-daughter and half on Aphrodite/Venus ( I won't use Venus
or Aphrodite in any title because they carry far too many preconceptions)
similarly almost every reference to female mythological names also carries
the usual down side of each myth, as in most cases the woman was often
repeatedly wronged)
My young woman is not so good that she is boring it is just that she hasn't
been naughty. She is serene, beautiful but not pretty, wise and intelligent
but not a powerful leader according to masculine values, caring,
considerate, strong, a sort of ideal of the promise of youth.
To start me off has anybody got any names of young women who could possibly
fit this bill?
Best regards to all
Clive
