Slate for beginners/What is slate?
Hi Ian,
I teach lettering to apprentice stonemasons in Brisbane, and we use
sandstone, marble and granite as we have no ready access to slate. The
closest deposits are in Gympie (SE Qld) and Herberton (N Qld, apart from
which we use Indian, South African and Chinese slate. I agree- slate is
great for lettering. Your news prompts me to plan a trip to Mintaro for some
pavers (my poor family!)
Your comment about the ceramic nature of slate reminds me of Eidsvold
Siltstone (500km North-West from Brisbane, South-West of Bundaberg). Michael
Whitty slabs and shapes the pale, soft creamy stone and then fires it to
produce hard, richly-coloured furniture that can't be scratched with a steel
blade. Have a look at his website here:

This stone promises to be useful for carving and lettering, however it
doesn't have slate's stark contrast between polished surface and the incised
letter.
Regards,
Simon
