Titles
Don and others.
Interesting discussion about a common delema. I take a
different tract, and tend not to title my abstract works. Seems
to me that when I do, the viewer tries to see what the title
suggests, and they miss seeing what the sculpture says to them.
(Viewer reacting to the piece) When asked what a piece is
supposed to be, I turn the question around and ask the viewer
what they see - feel - experience. Modern culture has gotten
extremely lazy mentally what with all the TV and Videos etc, and
if I can stimulate a little origional thought in a viewer --
well great-- the sculpture worked. What they see is not
important, only that THEY see something. I always do have a
working title in mind while carving a piece, but unless it is
really obvious, I usually do not share it with the viewing ( and
hopefully buying) public.
Just my two cents worth.
