Fixative
Jane,
I use 'Crystal Kote' workable matt fixative to make text drawing on
slate water & weatherproof for a year or more, using Faber-Castell
aquarelle pencils.I imagine that with Bath stone clean, dust free & dry,
an artist's fixative may be ok. "Digger's"stone sealant is used here in
restoration of sandstone memorials, and as a preparation for painting in
letters: but there are real longer term concerns about moisture
accumulating within such sealed stones."Breathing" seems to be the go.
I note your earlier para Irish slate.I have walked over an abandoned
slate quarry at Bunclody,Co. Wexford, & I note that there is an
(abandoned)quarry with very large pieces at St.Johnston's village,Co.
Donegal (Glentown)
Cheers, Ian.
Jane, sometimes a good penetrating sealer will do the job.
Available at most places that sell tile. Be advised to try any
sealer on a scrap piece of stone or inconspicuous place on the
sculpture first. It is my experience that different sealers
work on different stones differently. (does that make sense?)
