Moving Large Stones
Dear Calvin,
Likes your comments regards moving large stones and the pictures of your
work on the web:
I'm one of those people who tries to save as much time as possible when
undertaking the more mundane tasks such as moving stones so that I can work
on them. My latest energy saver is what I'd call ancient technology using
modern means.
I have my supply of large lumps of marble strategically located all round my
work yard, I hook a sling on any lump that I want to get into the studio and
attach it to the 4X4 and tow into line with my large door way. Inside I have
a heavy concrete pier to which I've attached a hook.
I have a very long length of what is called Laser Rope absolutely amazing
stuff something like 8 times the strength of steel cable of the same
thickness!!! One end of the laser rope goes on to the stone and then I just
run it through the hook and on to the 4X4 and as I drive away from the shed
the lump of marble goes straight in, a little bit scary as rock and vehicle
pass each other but it works very well indeed. 5 or 6 minutes from start to
finish to move a 1.5 tonne lump as much as 40 metres.
Best regards Clive
