Stereotomy: I just love that word! I had never heard it before. It intrigued
me so much I had to look it up in my trusty 1961 Funk & Wagnall, and I
couldn't find it. However, I did find:
Stereo- (combining form) Solid; Firm; hard (<Gk. Stereos: hard)
-tomy (combining form) (2)A (specified) kind of cutting or division
Also:
Stere (stir) n. A measure of capacity in the metric system, equal to one
cubic meter. (<F stere <Gk. Stereos: solid)
How about this for a great word... Toichological
I bought an interesting book recently- 'The template-makers of the Paris
basin' by John James. It is described as: 'Toichological techniques for
identifying the pioneers of the Gothic movement with an examination of
art-historical methodology' and I could not find that 't' word anywhere...
Had me stumped! But I think I've worked it out, and if you'll pardon my
pedantry...
According to Strong's Greek dictionary at
http://www.sacrednamebible.com/kjvstrongs/STRGRK51.htm
toichos: another form of teichos; a wall
teichos: akin to the base of tikto; a wall (as formative of a house: wall
-logie, -logy. "-logy" (suffix) 1. Discourse; expression: phraseology. 2.
Science; theory;
study: (Gk.<logos, word, speech)
Sooo... John James' study of French cathedrals aims to identify individual
masons and teams of masons along with a study of the development of masonry
construction, particularly by examining the chronology of building
seasons... I think!
