Pneumatic hammers date back to the 1880's.
Steam powered large saws were used earlier, perhaps as early as the 1840's.
I wouldn't be surprised if there were water driven saws or grinders prior
to that date. Hand saws and drills have been used since ancient times.
They also did a lot with picks, tooth axes, crandalls, along with a wide
variety of other handled tools.
