Subject: Stone Egyptian Vases

I went to egypt in 2001 and can verify that they are still definitely living
with a primitive state of technology! I saw people still using the corkscrew
drill for pumping water out of the nile, which was invented over 2000 years
ago. Also, obviously, mules and camels are common methods of transporting
goods and people. People still live in mudbrick homes with minimal roofing
(usually river brushes). I also visited an alabaster working shop where
vases were turned. They used a very primitive wheel that turned like a
potters wheel and the carver used a curved metal tool to carve out the
inside of the vase. I am sure this method could easily be reproduced by
anyone who wanted to get into turning vases without the expense of an
electric stone lathe. The alabster they work in egypt is actually a very
soft marble. The common name for it is alabaster however.
