Marble Suppliers
In my experience only the biggest of the marble counter top/marble slab
people would have access to blocks. Only those who do their own direct
importing (those companies often don't do any counter top fabrication, they
are strictly wholesale distributers supplying the myriad counter top
shops)... they could have their supplier overseas throw a block in a
container. However, the block won't necessarily be selected by someone who
recognizes the qualities of carving grade stone, rather it will be what
they can get from the particular quarries they deal with.
Monument companies should have access to blocks of Vermont marble. Also, be
cautious- there are a lot of low cost Chinese and Indian monuments coming
on the market, and what I've seen of their stone it is very inconsistent
and unreliable for carving purposes.
The Compleat Sculptor in NYC stocks marble blocks, http://www.sculpt.com
Eastern Marble Supply in Scotch Plains, NJ imports a lot of containers of
equipment and tools from Italy, and they have been known to throw a block
of marble in the container upon request. They are very well connected in
Italy, so the blocks I've seen that they've brought in were good. (but it's
been a number of years). 800-643-8818 ask for Joe Jr., Tom or Rosalie.
