Pneumatic tools killed thousands in Barre, VT
Interesting article on the history of pneumatic tools and death by
silicosis. Many, many, have given their health and finally their lives in
granite industry. Unions, government were useless in abating devastating
ongoing health disaster. Rough medical epidemic information and lawsuits
finally brought some abatement.
Bumpers, or surfacers were banned by the union because of dust. Tool
manufacturers, in response produced smaller surfacer to get under the
union ban that 8 pound limit on surfacer weight. Perhaps the resulting
tool was the 1 1/4 "knucle buster".
