Crystal planes in "David"
I also checked out the "David" site after it was mentioned recently
and really enjoyed it. There are a lot of fun links (like the marble
quarry). I also wrote to Professor Levoy to ask him if one could laser
scan the sculpture so as to pick up the angular dependence of
subsurface light scattering to obtain information about the possible
dislocation of crystal planes in certain directions (maybe indicative
of the "directions" in which Michelanglo carved some features) but he
didn't know if this was possible. Has anyone heard of something like
this, i.e. that subsurface crystal plane deformations remain long after
chiseling? It would be nice to "see" the master at work.
