Kevin,
Sorry to hear of your troubles.
What part of the country are you in?

There is a lot that can be done to repair stone, but you really need to get
an expert to take a look, and give you some on site advice.
Granite and marble can be glued and filled. I use Akepox epoxy. Its UV
resistant so it doesn't yellow and darken. It is very slow setting to give
you time to work, and its very strong. It can be tinted, or used as a patch
when you mix in crushed up stone, and grind it off when it sets up. Of
course grinding on old monuments can do a lot of damage if you get careless.
I got the Akepox from the Akemi glue suppliers. Look up their web site for
more information.

You will not be able to do much with granite using hand tools. The chisels
that cut limestone and marble are to soft. Carbide tipped chisels will do
the job, but they are very expensive. Again, you need to get an expert to
take a look at the damage. Contact your local monument dealer, or
stonemason, maybe there is a stone sculptor in your area. Check with the art
department at a university.
Good Luck,
George Graham
