Introducing myself; Shop Design
Norman,
In my fantasy studio, I would have sky lights and the north and west walls
made of windows. Mainly because I'm more of a night person, and I'd like to
have the evening light for as long as possible. When the natural light is to
strong, or to hot, I would use shutters to adjust. I'd rather start out with
too much light because its always easier to block it out as needed.
I don't have any choice but to use artificial light in my studio, so I'm
stringing up more florescent lights to the side of my carving area. I like
the light coming from over my shoulder and off to the side much more then
having light directly over head. The overhead light creates a lot of
distorting shadows, especially if it is real strong and bright.
When the weather breaks, hopefully in April, I'll be working outside as
much as possible.
If you are working in a place where flying stone chips are a problem, like
having chips end up in the clothes washing machine, I have found out that
hanging some heavy plastic to make a curtin really helps keep the peace,,,,
if you know what I mean.
