about your job.....
Simon,
I've had a question on my mind for you all day, and I still remember it!
Many years ago , when I first got into the monument industry, my employer
took all the shop people to Elberton , Georgia to see how monuments were
made. There, we visited a small museum dedicated to the early history of the
granite industry in that town. There, I saw a display of small polished
granite balls, about4" in diameter. I think they were apprentice projects.
Are the stone balls your students are doing, also an apprentice project to
learn how to carve granite?
I'm not familiar with the kind of stone you are working with. Is it a local
granite?
Would you tell us the process of making the balls? Are you teaching the use
of hand tools, or are you using diamond grinders and so on?
I've never tried to make a stone ball, and polishing it to perfection sounds
very difficult.
Please tell us more!
Thanks,
George Graham
