and a huge amount of time consuming rubbing with abrasives. Lots of slave
labor.
However, the Egyptians had small delicate flat chisels; I've seen some in
museums, so I'm sure the Greeks did too.
They didn't have tempered steel; the Egyptian chisels I saw were bronze, so
they probably had to spend as much time reshaping and sharpening the chisels
as they did carving.
