Marble Worker's Manual (1856)
Peggy,
Firstly, congratulations to you and Pat for your work at CAGenWeb in
producing such a useful resource to stonemasons and sculptors. I have often
read in it since you first advertised it to this group.
The Manual that you have posted on your Quarries page is different to the
Monument Dealer's Manual that I copied- I have the 1856 Marble Worker's
Manual in our TAFE library. It is very informative, great for building a
depth of knowledge about the trade.
Do you know of the Monumental News Scanning Project listed here?
http://www.nps.gov/phso/monuments/ The Manual I am referring to was
published by Monumental News. The project under Dennis Montagna from the NPS
is to record 50 years of publication of the Monumental News and publish it
on CD.
Also, many thanks for the explanation about the background sandstone image.
The Berea sandstone looks like a beautiful material. It was interesting
reading about the canal system in North America.
The NIST test wall has been mirrored here in Australia by CSIRO test walls,
but I have yet to discover information available on the Internet about it. I
looked up some Australian stones in the NIST wall, they have weathered badly
probably because they are poorly selected.
Thanks again
Simon
