Thanks for the further information about your stone- does it have a grainy
or a glassy appearance?

PVA glue is briefly described here: http://www.thistothat.com/glue/pva.shtml
although it is a woodworking application.

I recommended PVA adhesive because it is cheap, easy to use and readily
available, although it may not be suitable for an outdoor situation. It is
also a good idea, generally, to make infill patches in stone slightly weaker
than the stone, so the patch itself will degrade instead of the stone.

Using a PVA glue will allow you to carefully clean around the edges of the
patch with a damp sponge, lessening the need for abrasive rubbing.

Some products that are sold for masonry repair would be either too opaque or
too wet-looking (penetrating and glossy) for your item. I have had success,
as I previously mentioned, using any of the types that dry clear and mimic
the natural cement matrix between the grains.
