G'day Norman,

When I started out my favourite place was a massive old second hand
machinery store, I bought many bits and pieces there but the most useful of
all was a small hydraulic engine lifter.

I think if was in the same position these days, I'd be doing the same kind
of thing, checking out "clearance sales" (bankrupt Co's or farms, sorry
these are Australian terms and I don't know the US equivalent) Trading Post
newspapers and even markets that have a few stalls selling old machinery.

The gantry idea is good, if you can weld you could run one up in half a day
but always make sure you use good quality wheels. The main problems with
gantries are that they like to be pushed by two people or they have a
tendency to wander off where ever they feel like going.

They also take up an enormous amount of space and can get in the way when
you are working.

I'm more in favour of a tripod at this stage, packs away to nothing.

Re: hurting yourself lifting, big pieces are rarely the problem because you
simply can't lift them without stuff, it's the small and medium sized ones
that are the real problem.

The first big sculpture is always fun and will stretch your equipment to
max, I think if I was starting again I'd get into the habit of hiring
whatever I needed until I was convince that I couldn't do without something.
