green stone
Hi All,
Norman, I just finished a green man in a piece of alabaster I got from Art
City , I believe it was from Arizona. It is a pale apple green, very
uniform and solid, and took detail and undercutting well. I did it all with
hand tools, which is my favorite way to work soft stones. I would like to
add my recommendation that you give alabaster a try. My experience with the
green marbles and serpentines has also been that they are pretty hard, and
not always agreeable to one's design. One good thing about soft stones is
that you can work out design problems rather quickly, and then have a better
idea of how to proceed when you go to harder material. Unless you expect
this one piece will be your last. Anyway, enjoy the process. It gets
better and better.
Happy Carving,
