Blue stones
I bought a couple pieces of blue quartzite in Italy (quarried in
Brazil) about 6 years ago. The Italians call it "granito" (granite),
but my geologist friends confirmed it was quartzite. It is indeed
"fiendishly hard". I have been circling these pieces for years now,
trying to figure out how to work them best. A fabricator friend "lost
his shirt" trying to make a sink for $10,000 from a piece of this
stone. He said it ate diamond blades for breakfast, lunch and dinner,
and was painfully slow to carve. I don't have the hourly pressure that
he does, but hope to take a run at this beautiful stone later this
year. I am planning to carve it with a torch for most of the stone
removal, with diamonds for the final surfacing and polishing.
