Belgian black marble
Bill;
Quoted text begins.RE: "Is there any truth to something I've read, about there being no more
Belgian black marble, which is used in your work?"
End of quote.
The marble I have been using are from a couple of small pieces obtained
years ago -- though last fall I was with another sculptor, Horace
Farlowe, who bought several pieces of Belgian black from a dealer in
Carrara. Horace has been using a good bit of Belgian black in recent
years. You might want to visit his site: http://www.horacefarlowe.com/
to see some of his stuff.
I am not sure of the current state of Belgian black being quarried,
(perhaps someone else is?) but the Belgian sculptor Olivier Strubelle
told a number of stone sculptors here in Georgia years ago that Belgian
black was found in small nodes (think eighteen-wheeler size nodes) as
opposed to a single massive quarry, so the supply varied depending on how
many nodes were being worked at any one time. That is about the extent
of my knowledge on availability of the stone.
Thanks to you and the others for the positive comments about my site --
it is still a work-in-progress and I appreciate the feedback to make it
better!
Good Carving to You,
Don
