Indiana Limestone ??sources
Go to the Indiana Limestone Institute site at http://www.iliai.com/
Under the members list, check for a fabricator near you, contact them about
buying stone. I don't think they have anyone west of Kansas, but maybe
someone will ship.
The institute publications will explain grading - two colors, gray and
buff, three main grades, select, standard and rustic. Also Variegated is
from the point in the quarry beds where it shifts from gray to buff.
True select is extremely rare, what is often called select now would have
been considered standard 40 years ago...
You'll probably want to order "sawn six sides", unsanded. (sanding will
give you cleaner faces and costs extra, sawn might still have saw blade
marks). If you live close to a mill you might be able to visit and get them
to sell you off-cuts (the stuff from their dumpsters, usually 4 to 8" thick
irregular pieces)... if you build up a working relationship and become a
regular customer some of the mills might give you the off-cuts, but bear in
mind these are production shops, time is money, so they really can't afford
to spend time with someone who is buying one small piece. Some will if they
are in a good mood, but it's like going to a steel mill and asking for a
few pounds of steel.
