Champlain or Radio City Black Marble
Hello all;
Thought I'd chip in -- Champlain Black and Radio City Black are one and the
same. It is quarried on the Isle La Motte in Lake Champlain.
I've worked it several times and it is a hard but nice stone to work,
somewhat more homogenous than Tennessee Imperial Black (which I have found
to be a bit more difficult carving).
The Tennessee pinks and Cedars are also on my A-list of good working
marbles. I particularly like the very pale pink that is more of a gray --
but the only blocks I've worked have all been from a cutting yard (that used
to belong to the Georgia Marble Company) that closed during the Depression
and has now been paved over for a parking lot. Anybody know if there is
still any of that pale gray being quarried?
Thanks,
Don
