lettering chisels and hammers
Hi Norman
Glad you've got the bug to do some lettering.
You don't need all those tools - just one dummy - that is an iron headed
mallet with a wooden ash handle - go to http://www.tiranti.co.uk/
and to the search bit and type in dummy and you'll come up with a picture
and description. A medium weight would be fine to start with - and in the UK
costs about £12.50, ex packaging.
As for chisels - I don't know of suppliers in the US - there are sure to be
some - but you only need a couple to start - depending on the size of
lettering. I wouold suggest a 6mm and a 10mm as starters. The width of the
chisel corresponds to the width of the letter stem - and the letter stem
relates to the size of the letter.
So, suppose you are drawing a letter which is 50mm high (just over 2" a good
starting point) you would have a stem width of about 5-6mm - and therefore a
6mm chisel is ideal.
PS - you will also need a diamond whetstone or something similar to keep the
chisels sharp! Diamond whetstones are expensive but they last ages (for
ever).
Hope this helps
