Introducing myself
Hello list!
To introduce myself - by trade I am a drafter/designer in the petrochemical
field, currently 'between' contracts. I have been interested in stonecarving
for several years. As a youngster, one of my yearly tasks was to assist in
the planting of flowers at the local cemetary - I was always fascinated by
the workmanship of the headstones, particularly the oldest ones. More
recently, a visit to Salisbury Cathedral, England rekindled my interest and
bolstered my courage to give carving a try.
Working with hand tools thus far, I have completed several smallish pieces
of alabaster and soapstone - some stone purchased, some stone found. I have
been using hand saws for roughing and rasps, etc. for the detail portion. I
am currently working on a piece of 'found' soapstone, using a mallet and
chisel for the first time, I have to say, I love the feel of these tools in
my hands! (That is normal - right???)
I am interested in letter carving, and would like to try my hand at it. I
have a bit of a 'thing' for calligraphy, lettering & fonts, and have very
much enjoyed the conversations relating to this topic of late.
The depth of knowledge and wealth of information in these conversations is
outstanding. I hope someday to be able to contribute in the same fashion.
Happy carving to all,
Dallas
