slate characteristics
Dallas,
I don't know much about slate, yet, but I'm in the process of checking
out local slate (countertop, etc) businesses to get some for a
lettering project I want to do. They also used to quarry it here in
Merryland, so I'm looking into that as well. I'll share what I learn. I
remember having a slate board (for doing lessons on) when I was a
yea-high, it was extremely fine grained and jet black, and I think
thats the stuff you want for carving.
Quartzite is way different, the material I know is like a sandstone
(one of my favorite climbing areas in WV is composed of quartzite). Its
hard, abrasive and I doubt its much fun to carve. Curiously, lots of
old local headstones seem to be made of it.
