Subject:
slate characteristics
Slate was formed by sedimentary deposit of mud - and then compressed by
immense forces. In the UK it is found predominantly in Wales and Cumbria
(where it is green, owing to the deposit of organic material) and the south-
west - however, the characteristics are the same worldwide.
The material can be cleaved in one direction - hence slates or slate tiles,
used commonly in roofing.
As far as its use for lettering is concerned it really doesn't matter.
As long as the material is, for example, one-half inch thick, (say 15mm) it
will carve OK.
Slate varies in its texture- there are soft and hard types, and I have
letter carved in both. But the techniques are the same - a sharp tungesten
tipped tool and and ability and dedication (and enthusiasm and passion) to
carve.
Best of luck
