Try finding a building stone supplier in your area. Those kind of businesses
usually have a varity of stone for home builders, and landscapers that are
doing walkways, and floors. If they don't have slate in stock, they can get
some.

I was in a cemetery that had some old slate tablets or headstone over 100
years old. The sharpness of the letters was amazing. They might have been
done last year. The stone really let the skill of the carver stand out.

I have a book on lettering that is an excellent source for someone Just
starting out. Its by Michael Harvey, titled Carving Letters In Stone and
Wood. Published in 1987 in Great Britain.
