slate characteristics
A couple of considerations for slate for letter carving-
some slate has fine quartz veins which are hard as **** and make life
difficult, best avoided! As Graham says hardness varies a lot, you just have
to try a piece. One piece I had was so hard I had difficulty getting through
it with a tungsten chisel, if I'd known beforehand.... If the surface of
your slate is machined flat, it will be a lot easier to carve a clean line
than if the slate has its natural split surface.
Good luck!
