Marble resistance to Weather +
Bill;
" . . . are any of the [Georgia] greys as outdoors suitable as well? And
are any of them free enough of figuring to be good for figurative work?"
All the Tate Georgia marble is considered highly weather-resistant as far
as marble is concerned, greys included. As far as figuring goes, I
don't know how large a piece you might want to use (life-size full
figure?), but I have worked small blocks (1-2 cubic feet max.) of the
Georgia Pearl Grey that have virtually no figuring at all. I do know
that if you buy the Georgia white statuary grade it has very little
figuring even in large blocks -- but they have always sold it for about
twice the price of the more variegated Cherokee. I would assume that
the Pearl Grey blocks are sometimes quarried without too much figuring,
but whether you could specify that or how much it would be are questions
for the company. I think I said the dimensional stone division of the
Georgia Marble company was owned by a French corporation, but in looking
up their website I discovered it is instead French-Canadian (Quebec):
