Subject:
polishing stone birdbaths
This touches on a question that has been plaguing me for some time now. I
have been carving various stone spheres varying 1 to 2 feet in diameter. I
would like to carve some stone bases to fit them, install a pump under the
base, and suspend the balls on a cushion of water, forming a fountain. Some
examples of similar stone sphere fountains made commercially can be seen at
the following link: http://www.waterfountains.com
The carving of a fountain base seems to be much like the carving of a
birdbath, but it must be machined to keep the exact radius of the ball-
otherwise the ball will not suspend properly and rotate on the base. Does
anyone have any ideas on how to machine the negative spherical area and keep
the radial tolerances? As always, I eagerly await the group's thoughts.
