maquettes
Bill,
I like to use clay to sketch out the basic idea of a piece, much as a
painter would use a pencil sketch. I find that this helps set spatial
relationships more firmly in my mind, and helps bring potential problem
areas to light. Since I work on a small scale, this is a practical
solution. I have tried carving wax in the past, but found it almost as
difficult to work as the stone itself.
